On the second level of partnership and next in order of importance, we have the Official Partners, again each exclusively representing its particular field of activity. Official Partners too have extensive communication rights to the project, including use of the official Solar Impulse names and symbols. They too are systematically identified by Solar Impulse at the official sites and during the different flight missions.
INTERNATIONAL
Bayer MaterialScience is supporting the Solar Impulse initiative with technical expertise, high-tech polymer materials and energy-saving lightweight products. Baytubes® carbon nanotubes from Bayer MaterialScience, for example, can potentially increase battery performance and improve the strength of structural components while keeping their weight to a minimum. Other potential applications include innovative adhesives, polyurethane rigid foams for cockpit and engine insulation, and extremely thin yet break-resistant polycarbonate films and sheet for the cockpit glazing.
“We are delighted to be an official partner in this exciting project; through our involvement we will have the unique opportunity to contribute our know-how and innovative new materials. This support underlines Bayer MaterialScience’s commitment and responsibility to a sustainable environment as well as contributing to the success of Solar Impulse’s great technological challenge.”
Patrick Thomas, CEO of Bayer MaterialScience
Engineering Partner
The ALTRAN group, a leading innovation consultant, is making its multi-disciplinary (project management, risk management, etc.) and multi-sector (aeronautics, renewable energies and sustainable development) expertise available to Solar Impulse. ALTRAN has already helped build a flight simulator to develop flight strategies (including simulating the influence of weather on the round-the-world flight) and to optimize the design of the airplane and its sub-systems.
"By committing itself to the Solar Impulse project, Altran is offering its expertise to an ambitious and extremely innovative exploit. Altran has worked on the conception of the airplane (energy, systems, cockpit), the management of the project and on the conception and use of an airplane modeling and simulation program."

NATIONAL
National Telecom Partner
As national telecommunications partner, Swisscom is developing an ultra-light, energy-saving communications solution for Solar Impulse that will allow the pilots to remain in constant contact with the tracking station as well as transmit data and live images. Swisscom will also make sure that all interested parties can experience the adventure of Solar Impulse first hand, in particular via its mobile communication services.
