The Solar Impulse Foundation, under the close supervision of the Swiss Confederation authorities, was founded by Bertrand Piccard and Stefan Catsicas, at that time Director of Research at the EPFL. It receives and manages donations received from Angel Ambassadors, Supporters and all other donors (companies, individuals or foundations). Recognized as a non-profit organisation, it is exempt from taxes, thereby providing certain tax advantages. The Foundation’s goals are to fund research and development projects promoting renewable energy and energy conservation, and to encourage adults and children alike, through activities and educational programs, to make use of such solutions as ways of achieving sustainable development. It is in this context that it is providing financial support for the scientific project "Solar Impulse". At a later date, the foundation will fund further projects with similar or identical goals.
