At JFK International Airport’s Hangar 19, symbol of the accomplishment of the Across America mission from San Francisco to New York City, Solar Impulse organized a ceremony with the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the publication of The Little Prince.
During this occasion, both Foundations announced a partnership to promote pioneering spirit amongst today’s youth. The synergies couldn’t be more evident. Solar Impulse wants to encourage people to be innovators in their daily lives, in particular in the field of renewable energies and clean technologies. The Saint-Exupery Foundation, on the footsteps of The Little Prince, promotes human values such as respect and responsibility for the environment. By launching a partnership, these two Foundations will continue to perpetuate a message of hope and of courage into the future.
“The pioneers of aviation wanted to find ways to control the world; you’re now being pioneers by seeking ways to protect it,” said Nicolas Delsalle, Secretary General of the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Foundation of Bertrand and André.
Antoine’s great-nephew and Lieutenant-Colonel of the French Air Force, Hervé de Saint-Exupéry added “Yesterday we had a dream, but today it’s become a reality. Solar Impulse is a miracle as courage, hope and peace are keywords directly linked to it.”
During the final leg of the epic journey Across America both pilots wore a commemorative badge on their flying suits and the Little Prince’s yellow scarf while carrying a special 70th anniversary edition of the book in the cockpit. The original copy of the first edition is at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York.
“Saint-Exupéry was criticized by other pilots for writing about spirituality and human values. Thanks to his courage to express philosophical ideas, he’s paved the way for us to do so as well,” said Bertrand in a very emotional speech about Saint-Exupéry’s contribution to aviation history and his capacity to inspire people even today.
“Like Saint-Exupéry’s “Night Flight”, flying into darkness is incredible but even more so in a solar plane,” explained André as he spoke about his passion for aviation from a young age. “Behind all this technology there are men and women who make it happen. It’s more than a simple collaboration, it’s friendship and trust.” He concluded, thanking the Solar Impulse team for its efforts that were especially evident during the last leg of the Across America mission when the underside of the wing was ripped off in flight.
Rally with us
Many of you have told us you would like to buy Solar Impulse flight gear or meet and talk to the pilots. This might be your chance to get one or the other!
Anyone is eligible - all you have to do is donate or raise an equivalent amount from your own network through Rally.org, our fundraising partner. If you donate or raise $50, you will receive a Solar Impulse Across America limited edition patch. Donate or raise $500 and you will receive a choice of rewards, either VIP tickets to an event in Washington D.C. or New York City OR a personalized Solar Impulse team bag!
Best of all, the proceeds will go to a good cause -- Solar Impulse educational events for students. Presentations at schools and hangar events are a big part of our time on the ground during our Across America flight and we want to continue to offer these educational events free of charge. A $25 donation pays for one student, so every donation matters.
