Partners

Solar Impulse Partners have in common a pioneering spirit, a long-term vision and a desire to explore new horizons. They share the basic values of the project: exploration, technological innovation, competence, entrepreneurial expertise, passion, teamwork, dream and emotion.

Like Solar Impulse’s initiators, they are keen to use these values to promote renewable energies and the technologies needed for protecting the environment.

Main Partners

At the highest level of association with and contribution to the project are four Main Partners, each in a different field of activity. These partners are named on the airplane, on the pilots' uniforms and on those of the Solar Impulse Team, on all construction and operations sites and during all flight missions. Our Main Partners’s reputation and influence are essential to the success of the project. They help to relay its key messages and also benefit from the project’s enormous communications potential. Right now the four Main Partner slots have been filled. These Main Partners, who have already guaranteed the construction of the first two airplanes are SOLVAY, an international industrial Group active in Chemistry, OMEGA, a watch brand with a worldwide and ‘lunar’ reputation and a pioneer of Olympic timing, SCHINDLER, a leading global elevator and escalator provider, and a technology pioneer for clean mobility, and ABB, whose heritage of technology innovation in renewables, sustainable transportation and energy efficiency makes it also an ideal partner for Solar Impulse.

Official Partners

On the second level of partnership and next in order of importance, we have the Official Partners, again each exclusively representing its particular field of activity. Official Partners too have extensive communication rights to the project, including use of the official Solar Impulse names and symbols. They too are systematically identified by Solar Impulse at the official sites and during the different flight missions.

Official supporters

The Official Supporters are the third Partnership level. They can associate themselves with the flight missions and take advantage of being an official name in a variety of communications and promotional activities for the duration of the project.

Official suppliers

At the fourth and last official partnership level we find the Official Suppliers. Official Partners enjoy various promotional rights, an official name and participation in the test flights.

Institutional and aeronautics partners

Solar Impulse can count of the knowledge and experience of major institutions and players in the worlds of science, aerospace and leading edge technology, keen to join in the solar adventure and integrate it into their respective technical and scientific fields. Their advice is as precious as the credibility and prestige they bring to the project.

Specialized Partners

The specialized partners bring competencies and know-how which are complementary and necessary to the development and realization of the project.
In this capacity, they play a fundamental role in the project's success.

Solar Impulse is working hard to bring the aviation industry to the next level – a more sustainable one. Like Solar Impulse, skyguide believes in a sustainable aviation economy and is committed to reducing the use of fossil energy through improvements to airspace design and management in Swiss and FABEC airspace at the core of Europe.

Our investments of financial, human and technological resources are high and rely on a good network of partners. Skyguide has been contributing to Solar Impulse’s vision from its beginning by providing its expertise and manpower.

By building a productive relationship with key administrations such as FOCA or Swiss Air Force skyguide facilitates Solar Impulse activities in terms of clearances, authorizations and validations. By orderly integrating Solar Impulse experimental planes into the regular civil and military air traffic, skyguide provides the necessary safety for Solar Impulse pilots and other users of the airspace.

This morning, the Solar Impulse 2 successfully completed its first flight, on board, the test pilot Markus Scherdel, who was also the first, back in 2009, to take command of the Solar Impulse 1.

To thank and congratulate him, Solar Impulse wished, in collaboration with Omega, main partner of the project, and according to tradition in the aviation, to offer him a symbolic gift.

It was during the team celebration that Claude Nicollier, Head of Flight Test Operations, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg offered Markus an Omega Speedmaster HB-SIA watch engraved with his name and the mention “First Flight Si2”. Again, congratulations Markus!

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is supporting Solar Impulse in its daring endeavor to fly a plane around the world, powered only by solar energy. ABB and Solar Impulse make for a perfect partnership. Both are Swiss-based pioneers of cutting-edge clean energy technologies and both are striving to address the world’s energy challenges through groundbreaking technological innovation. Solar Impulse shows what is possible when one is willing to venture beyond the boundaries of the conventional wisdom; ABB shows how breakthrough innovation can be transformed into technologies and solutions for a better world.

The parallels don’t end there. ABB and Solar Impulse are both focused on solving similar challenges. Each has made significant contributions to our knowledge of how renewable energy can be more efficiently transformed into electricity and how that electricity can be deployed in the most efficient way possible. Both are working on novel and creative ways of storing energy to improve the reliability and stability of electrical systems.

By joining forces, ABB and Solar Impulse will be able to strengthen the case for renewables and to demonstrate that economic growth, progress and quality of life can be maintained and improved without consuming unsustainable amounts of energy and polluting the environment.

It was a personal dream to have ABB joining our family of partners, as we have exactly the same goal of improving the world by reaching more energy efficiency and saving natural resources of our planet.

Whilst Solar Impulse wants to motivate people to use clean technologies, ABB produces them to bring them on the market. This illustrates how realistic the message of Solar Impulse is. ABB makes it possible for everyone to use electrical power as efficiently as on our solar airplane, and to enable renewable energy and ...

ABB makes it possible for everyone to use electrical power as efficiently as on our solar airplane, and to enable renewable energy and sustainable transport.

With his background of engineer, André is elated as well. ABB is an ideal partner with its long history and rich heritage of technology innovation and this is exactly what also drives us. During the Official Presentation of Solar Impulse 2, on April 9, ABB will be joining the panel discussion around the topic “Meeting the Technological Challenges”.

By the way, have you noticed our new motto “Exploration to Change the World”? It fits so well with our new partnership.
