Partners

Solar Impulse Partners have in common a pioneering spirit, a long-term vision and a desire to explore new horizons. They share the basic values of the project: exploration, technological innovation, competence, entrepreneurial expertise, passion, teamwork, dream and emotion.

Like Solar Impulse’s initiators, they are keen to use these values to promote renewable energies and the technologies needed for protecting the environment.

Main Partners

At the highest level of association with and contribution to the project are four Main Partners, each in a different field of activity. These partners are named on the airplane, on the pilots' uniforms and on those of the Solar Impulse Team, on all construction and operations sites and during all flight missions. Our Main Partners’s reputation and influence are essential to the success of the project. They help to relay its key messages and also benefit from the project’s enormous communications potential. Right now the four Main Partner slots have been filled. These Main Partners, who have already guaranteed the construction of the first two airplanes are SOLVAY, an international industrial Group active in Chemistry, OMEGA, a watch brand with a worldwide and ‘lunar’ reputation and a pioneer of Olympic timing, SCHINDLER, a leading global elevator and escalator provider, and a technology pioneer for clean mobility, and ABB, whose heritage of technology innovation in renewables, sustainable transportation and energy efficiency makes it also an ideal partner for Solar Impulse.

Official Partners

On the second level of partnership and next in order of importance, we have the Official Partners, again each exclusively representing its particular field of activity. Official Partners too have extensive communication rights to the project, including use of the official Solar Impulse names and symbols. They too are systematically identified by Solar Impulse at the official sites and during the different flight missions.

Host Partner

The Solar Impulse team will be hosted by Masdar and Abu Dhabi at the start of January for testing and training before the start of the first solar-powered flight around the world, which is due to take place in March 2015.

Official supporters

The Official Supporters are the third Partnership level. They can associate themselves with the flight missions and take advantage of being an official name in a variety of communications and promotional activities for the duration of the project.

Official suppliers

At the fourth and last official partnership level we find the Official Suppliers. Official Partners enjoy various promotional rights, an official name and participation in the test flights.

Institutional and aeronautics partners

Solar Impulse can count of the knowledge and experience of major institutions and players in the worlds of science, aerospace and leading edge technology, keen to join in the solar adventure and integrate it into their respective technical and scientific fields. Their advice is as precious as the credibility and prestige they bring to the project.

Specialized Partners

The specialized partners bring competencies and know-how which are complementary and necessary to the development and realization of the project.
In this capacity, they play a fundamental role in the project's success.

Hosted by Masdar, Solar Impulse’s Official Host Partner, Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week addresses the global energy challenge by exploring the relationships between economic development, poverty eradication, energy security, water scarcity and climate change. In 2014, it welcomed over 32,000 participants from 170 countries, and this year Solar Impulse is proud to be invited as a symbol of innovation in solar energy.

Anchored by the World Future Energy Summit, the 2015 program features a series of complementary events, conferences and exhibitions. Under the wings of Solar Impulse, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) teamed up with the Financial Times to host a debate about the future of global energy supply.

When we started Solar Impulse, we wanted to find concrete solutions to apply on the ground”, said André Borschberg. “If we adopt the clean technologies that exist now, we can halve the energy consumption of our world”, continued Bertrand Piccard.

Celebrating the achievements in this domain is the Zayed Future Energy Prize, annually awarded to companies and organizations that reflect impact, innovation, long-term vision and leadership in renewable energy and sustainability. All of the nominees showed leading environmental awareness in both clean energy generation and efficient consumption, and the award ceremony was a time to reflect on the accomplishments of 2014, while looking forward to continued momentum in 2015.

What better opportunity for Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg - Solar Impulse founders and pilots - to announce the route of the First Round-The-World Solar Flight?

For the UAE, this year holds the word “innovation” as a cornerstone. Through the pioneering spirit of Solar Impulse, 2015 is the opportunity to grasp the opportunities of clean energy in our lives.

Swiss Re Corporate Solutions makes renewable energy projects possible, like Solar Impulse by providing insurance from conception to construction and operation. Its vast insurance expertise in aviation, engineering, construction and renewable energy risks makes it a strong partner for a project as visionary as Solar Impulse. Swiss Re Corporate Solutions aviation experts are closely watching preparations for the round-the-world flight and they are confident that the risks are well managed.

Hanspeter Maeder, Senior Marine Cargo Underwriter from Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, attended the loading operations of Si2 with Solar Impulse's Initiator and Chairman, Bertrand Piccard, and Peter Frei, Head of Conceptual Design and Aerodynamics, a few weeks ago in Payerne, Switzerland.

"I was able to witness the loading of the plane on site – and what an amazing event it was. Every team member was moving extremely carefully, a lot was done by hand in order to avoid any possible damage to the plane. For example, it took one hour to load just one of the wings… It is great that my employer is one of the sponsors of this great project and I am proud to see our logo on the nose and tail of the plane. I constantly receive a lot of positive comments from clients, brokers and even competitors, who are all impressed with our commitment to insure and partner with Solar Impulse. It's a great 'ice-breaker' to start any business meeting or any conversation. Everyone is fascinated about the ambitions of this adventure!"

It is worth mentioning that the underwriting process (evaluating the risk and providing insurance cover) for this unique plane is very particular and complex because there is no precedent. A comparable plane simply does not exist. Swiss Re Corporate Solutions has the experience and the competence to insure what others consider "uninsurable", in this case Solar Impulse. They can provide a risk management framework that allows investors to become comfortable with investing into such projects. That’s part of the role that they, and the insurance industry, take in advancing renewable energy and clean technologies.

MASDAR

HOST PARTNER IN ABU DHABI

Masdar is Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company which works to advance the development, commercialization and deployment of clean energy technologies and solutions.

The company serves as a link between today’s fossil fuel economy and the energy economy of the future. Wholly owned by the Mubadala Development Company PJSC, the strategic investment company of the Government of Abu Dhabi, Masdar is dedicated to the Emirates’ long-term vision for the future of energy and water.

The relationship between Masdar and Solar Impulse started in 2003 from a common perspective shared between the UAE leadership and the Solar Impulse founders Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg. The goal is to promote technological values together to preserve the planet’s resources, in a bid to encourage political leaders and organisations to adopt cleaner and more efficient technologies.

Masdar has been tasked by the government with investing in and advancing the renewable energy and clean technology industry both domestically and internationally.

“Abu Dhabi, Masdar and Solar Impulse have in common a pioneering spirit, a long-term vision and a desire to explore new horizons. We share a commitment to foster the development of technological advances in alternative energy sources in order to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
H. E. Dr. Sultan Ahmad Al Jaber, UAE minister of state and chairman of Masdar.
