A collaborative platform for the management and relocation of recycled wooden pallets

June 2021

Gallery OPATRACE 1

Today, nearly 500 million Euro pallets circulate around the world. But with a loss rate of 10 to 15% – the result of operating in silos and a lack of communication between Supply Chain professionals – this represents a real disaster in economic and environmental terms. Opatrace helps to increase the quantity and quality of recycled and available Euro-pallets, so that the logistics actors are not only using them ... but that they reuse more and better! How? The collaborative platform provides real-time visibility of pallet flows, allowing better restitution, fewer purchases and less waste. By aggregating information, the solution helps supply chain professionals to reduce their losses of wooden pallets and to promote the circular economy of packaging ... While also reducing costs associated with the management and transport of load carriers (less CO2 emissions). From the supplier to the consignee, through the carrier, the whole chain benefits from productivity gains, but also a better management of reverse packaging. By recovering 100% of reusable wooden pallets, we do limit the purchase of new ones and preserve the natural resource and indirectly combat deforestation

Implementation Stories

Implemented by Messageries Laitières in Vires (France) in 2021

With the aim of digitizing its processes, Messageries Laitières has chosen to manage its European pallet flows using the Opalean software. The dairy operator can now effectively manage its end-to-end flows from its thirty production sites simplifying its packaging management with chartered carriers. Opalean tracks pallets in real time allowing them to be recycled efficiently and effectively, recovering close to 100% of reusable pallets.

The impact of this automated platform: 445,000 tons of CO2 stored per year through 10 million pallets managed, and up to 2000 hectares of forest preserved per year, avoiding 5 to 7.5 million lost pallets annually.

Implemented by ADEO in Multiple cities (France) in 2022

Adeo Group includes all of the DIY brands belonging to the holding company for the Mulliez family. Adeo Services, the Group’s service center, was working on optimizing its reverse packaging since September 2020. In February 2021, mainly motivated by environmental and safety reasons as well as objective economic factors, the group decided to put an end to the expendable pallet toward Euro-pallet and LPR rental pallet. The purpose was threefold: to save money, to improve the operator’s working conditions and to act for the planet by preserving wood, our precious natural resource.

Thanks to Opalean, Adeo Services can trace its transactions in real time and obtain a consolidated view of its accounts. This way, Opalean simplifies invoicing and reduces management costs.

Implemented by Leroy Merlin in Paris (France) in 2022

Leroy Merlin – one of the European leaders in DIY retail – uses the web platform Opalean to manage its packaging flows with more reliability, on its entire distribution network (2.5 million loading operations managed by 12 warehouses, 141 stores and 70 carriers).

Reduces its carbon footprint by decreasing purchases of new pallets, and the volume of wood waste in stores.
