Identification

Addressing the lack of applicable and effective approach to reduce livestock emissions, Symbrosia provides a solution to grow enough Asparagopsis taxiformis for the livestock industry and reduce its impact on the environment.

Methane is a greenhouse gas that is a product of digestion and fermentation in the stomachs of ruminant animals including dairy cows, cattle, sheep, goats, and bison. Studies estimate that burping animals contribute to anywhere from 5 to 20% of total global emissions. For companies and producers in the livestock industry, methane emissions often contribute to over 40% of a company’s emission inventory. Acknowledging this challenge, Symbrosia has created SVD - a seaweed feed additive able to reduce ruminant methane emissions by over 90%, when sprinkled on cattle feed at a ~0.4% inclusion rate. In order to grow enough product to provide for the livestock industry, Symbrosia is positioned at this nexus, bringing the technical skills needed to meet milestones and proving out the commercial viability as well as the positive environmental impact of growing this product in culture.

  • By 2024, SVD could reduce about 63,000 ton CO2-eq on an annual basis in the form of methane reduction
03.

The Financial benefits

  • Introduces the notion of "methane neutral milk" which could soon become an interesting selling proposition for brands and retailers
  • No upfront investment required
