The HB-SIA solar airplane is getting ready to take off for Brussels tomorrow, Friday 13 May, and the whole Solar Impulse team is on the alert.

Take-off from Payerne is scheduled for 06:00 LT. A very early morning departure, but this is due to the changing weather pattern forecast: "After a lull on Friday, the weather will become very unsettled at the weekend, with rain and especially a sharp drop in temperatures." The wind is expected to veer westerly during the day and the HB-SIA very sensitive to wind - prefers to take wing ahead of that.

480 kilometres later, pilot André Borschberg will reach destination at the end of what looks like being a complex fascinating flight. Landing is scheduled for 21:00 LT.

I suggest you try out the latest mobile application straight away. With it you can track the flight as if you were on board the plane.

The application operates in two modes: live when the plane is in flight or during special events, then statically for the rest of the time. Obviously the most exciting time to use it is when the plane is flying, because then you can:

  • See the virtual cockpit and the plane's performance data at all times
  • See and listen to "Solar Impulse TV", especially interviews with the pilot in real time and webcasts by the journalist Signe (prononced Sègnè).
  • Find out what is happening in the Mission Room, which coordinates the flight
  • Follow the plane's position on a map in real time
  • Chat with other supporters

A number of events will also be covered live by the Solar Impulse multimedia team, both after Brussels from 23 to 30 May and during the Salon du Bourget, from 20 to 26 June.

The rest of the time, when HB-SIA is on the ground, you can use the application for example to make a virtual inspection of the plane in 3D or see photos and videos of Solar Impulse.

In short, log on right away, it's really worthwhile, and tell you friends if you like the application.

How is it done? Nothing simpler: just click on your mobile model and download the Solar Impulse application:

iPhone/iPad

Android

Oh, I forgot: for details of up-coming activities, and especially the flight times in case they are changed, click on "Notification" or have a look at the website www.solarimpulse.com. You will certainly not miss anything.

Over to you. Have a good (virtual) flight!
