Widuz is a startup from Singapore that is developing a new class of renewable and sustainable material by engineering bamboo material through a patented process. The new material by Widuz, is known as Bamboo Veneer Lumber and trademarked as BVL™. BVL™ is a high-performance structural composite made from fast growing sustainable bamboo fibers and has strength up to 3 times of engineered timber products and 5 times more sustainable. Unlike timber, Widuz’s BVL™ is not susceptible to decay or degradation and is much more dimensionally stable. Widuz has successfully completed a Proof-of-Concept project in Batam, Indonesia where BVL™ was used in a variety of applications in a modular housing unit. The applications include structural beams and columns, window, and door frames, as well as interior furniture and fittings. Widuz patented process has already been granted worldwide and the technology has been well developed by the founders who worked at top research institutes in Singapore, Germany and Switzerland. Bamboo, as a raw material, grows up to 5 times faster than the average timber materials and thus it could open up new opportunities for development of engineered products including BVL™ to address both the shortage of timber supply and the global deforestation challenge.
