Event: the role of start-ups in addressing global development challenges

On May 14th 2019, in the Palace of Nations in Geneva, UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) and the Solar Impulse Foundation will debate the role of start-ups in addressing global development challenges.
What role can start-ups play in tackling today's most pressing development challenges? This will be the core question of Get Up, Stand Up, Start-up for Green Goals, a side-event organised by UNCTAD and the Solar Impulse Foundation.
The discussion is a side-event of the 22nd United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD), which is the United Nations' home for discussions on science and technology - what's new, what matters, what's changing and what the impact is - and how this affects development and a sustainable future for all.
The expected outcomes of the CSTD it to provide high-level advice on science, technology and development issues to the United Nations General Assembly. The discussions will gather national governments, civil society and different UN bodies such as ITU, UNESCO or the Commission on Status of Women.
The side-event will start with an open discussion between Bertrand Piccard, Isabelle Durant, UNCTAD’s Deputy Secretary-General and Shumete Gizaw, Ethiopian State Minister for Science and Technology. This interactive session will focus on how start-ups are contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals by designing innovative technological solutions to these challenges.
Following the discussion, six startups awarded with the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label will join the conversation and present their solutions:

Joining the CSTD is a unique opportunity for innovators to exchange with UN bodies and national governments, and to get the chance to present their technology. Other side events will cover a wide range of topics related to technology and development such as the role of tech in the empowerment of communities or the issues of AI and ethics in developing world etc.
