Identification
In Sub-Saharan Africa, there are over 700 million people who do not have access to electricity and therefore lack access to refrigeration. This leads to food and vaccine wastage. Using the power of the sun and water, Koolboks created an affordable off-grid solution that is able to generate continuous refrigeration for up to 4 days, even in the absence of power and limited sunlight by storing energy in the form of ice, rather than in batteries. This technology brings down the cost of owning an off-grid solar refrigerator by close to 40%. Moreover, PAYGO technology is integrated in the freezers. This made them even more affordable and enables customers to pay in monthly, weekly, or daily instalments. Thanks to Koolboks, now individuals, pharmacies, or healthcare facilities can pay as low as 30$ to own a solar off-grid refrigerator.

The environmental benefits
- •The refrigerant R600a used in Koolboks freezers has a negligible global warming potential and is 235 times less dangerous to the environment compared to R143a which is commonly used in AC freezers in Nigeria
- •The technology of storing energy in the form of ice can retain the cabinet temperature between -20°C to 5°C for 4 to 7 days
- •Use of 500 units of Koolhome freezers eliminates 122.6 metric tons of CO2

The Financial benefits
- •A customer owning a 210L Koolhome freezer spends $1630 over 2 years compared to the customer owning an AC freezer, who spends $2180 over the same period (34% savings)
- •With the PAYGO technology, customer can pay over a period of 12, 18 or 24 months and this reduces the huge upfront cost
- •Storing energy in the form of ice brings down the cost of owning our product by around 40%.
