Identification

As electric mobility is on the rise, parking lots and public streets are increasingly equipped with charging infrastructures. Additional energy and power needs may become critical if not properly managed. SMATCH by ENGIE handles EV charging so to avoid electrical reinforcement while delivering the optimal charging experience to each EV driver. SMATCH manages the charging speed of each car so that the physical constraints and site-specific priority rules are respected, and each user’s needs are taken in consideration. In addition, SMATCH is capable to respond to specific needs of the grid operators by raising/reducing the charging speed, or even injecting energy on the grid (also called “V2G”) so to keep the equilibrium between consumption and production, with invisible impact on the driver's charging comfort.

Implementation Stories

SMATCH by ENGIE
Implemented by EQUANS and City of Rotterdam in Rotterdam (Netherlands) in 2022

SMATCH, ENGIE's smart charging solution for electric vehicles (EV), is currently being deployed by EQUANS as part of a large EV charging concession from the City of Rotterdam. SMATCH is steering the charge in order to manage electrical network imbalance without impacting the EV user. More than 1000 chargers are implementing SMATCH in Rotterdam to date, with a total of 10.000 to be deployed later this year. With SMATCH, a better equilibrium is continuously ensured between electricity production and consumption, allowing a better use of intermittent renewable assets and reducing the need to activate more CO2-emitting production means.

Result

First results show that overall charging power can be rapidly and intermittently reduced by 1MW on average for 1000 chargers at relevant moments, which avoids activating electricity production assets with bad CO2 performance.

03.

The environmental benefits

  • Can reduce by 40% the charging power peaks in B2B, while respecting each user's charging needs in time and energy
  • Is able to reduce by 15% - 22% the charging power peaks in a city, with charging sessions only 5% longer on average compared to the classical, non-smart situation and invisible impact on EV drivers customer experience
  • Can integrate complex (multi-staged) physical constraints and site-specific priority rules, as well as individual users' charging needs
  • Actively contributes to boost the spread of electric vehicles
  • Reduces the EV charging environmental footprint, thanks to the preferred use of locally produced green energy
  • Charging can follow the variable CO2 content of the electricity mix and energy can even be transferred between cars when more favorable from a CO2 perspective, which can lead to more than 10% (and up to 70%) CO2 content reduction
04.

The Financial benefits

  • SMATCH allows to reduce charging infrastructure costs by 30%
  • SMATCH allows to reduce energy bills by 100€/connector/year
