During Europe’s biggest air show, #AIR14, Solar Impulse 2 surprised an enthusiastic crowd by making two test flights.

Throughout the 10 days of the Air Show, the #Si2 hangar was open to the public, who had an opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of innovation and clean technologies thanks to an interactive exhibition. Throughout the 10 days of the Air Show, the #Si2 hangar was open to the public, who had an opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of innovation and clean technologies thanks to an interactive exhibition. Visitors could also get right up close to the airplane, and have their photos taken sitting in a mock-up of the cockpit!

The founders and pilots of Solar Impulse, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, were thrilled to have the chance to spread their pioneering message to such large and enthusiastic crowd of people. They took the stage personally to give a presentation about their aircraft, before answering numerous questions about the round-the-world flight, which now looms near.

Solar Impulse takes this opportunity to offer its warmest congratulations to Colonel Ian Logan and his team of organisers at #Air14, who gave enormous pleasure to hundreds of thousands of spectators.

#Air14 in numbers:

-9 days

-184 flight demonstrations, among which 2 by #Si2

-1 taxi test by André Borschberg

-400'000 visitors

-3'300 mock cockpit selfies

-500 "#Si2 caps" sold

This Friday, September 5th, will live long in my memory. This evening at around 18h, after spending more than three years organizing, thinking, and supervising our engineering team as they built #Si2, I will fly it for the first time.

This maiden flight in Si2 will be a very special moment for me. One more step towards the launch of our round-the-world flight. I am delighted that Bertrand too will make his first flight in the coming days and we’ll be able to share our impressions!

This maiden flight in Si2 will be a very special moment for me. One more step towards the launch of our round-the-world flight. I am delighted that Bertrand too will make his first flight in the coming days and we’ll be able to share our impressions!

When I observe the progress made since the first main-spar (the wing’s backbone) fractured during a load test in 2012, I am full of admiration for the energy displayed by the entire team: Mission Across America in 2013 with Si1; Si2 assembly; presentation in April, first flight in June, virtual flight around the world this spring ... And it's not over yet! There are still quite a few test flights to be carried out, and what’s more we still have to organize all the national government approvals needed before we can begin our journey on March 1st next year.

Come watch the take-off at around 6pm (UTC +2) at Payerne airbase, as part of AIR 14.

The objective of Solar Impulse is to allow people to follow the adventure on the web and to create a strong engagement in the followers base.

… the MARCOM team – short for marketing & communications – are also busy making preparations. The nine people in MARCOM are working energetically to make the Solar Impulse adventure known to the world at large, through marketing, communication, branding, publishing, web-based activities, merchandising, and guided tours. They take care of relations with the public, press and partners.

This week, two of us from the MARCOM team are going to introduce ourselves: Vincent and Bruno, responsible for keeping the website interesting, and for social networks. You most likely know us without realizing it. Every week we go looking for new content that might interest you, and are often out in the field to let you see behind the scenes of Solar Impulse. Have you ever watched the web series "homemade" #Insider on Youtube? Are you already connected to our Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram and Vine accounts? We urge you to take a look at these activities, and let us have your ideas, suggestions and requests!

“ Six months flying around the world in a solar airplane, sitting beside the pilots and their team ...just as if you were there..”

During the 6 months when our pilots and some support team members are on their way around the world, we aim to enable you to experience every moment as if you were there, thanks to our platforms:

- The round-the-world website of Solar Impulse will allow you to experience the epic journey minute by minute, as if sitting in with the pilots and Mission Control Center (MCC). You will have access to videos and photos and all information collected on social networks. You can contact the team, assist the pilot, and above all help to spread news of the Solar Impulse adventure and the message it sends among your friends!

- The round-the-world mobile app: Solar Impulse will also be accessible on your smartphone, allowing you to keep track of the missions, and even talk to the pilot and crew.

- Our social networks: if you’re not yet following us, but would like to be kept informed about our activities, please don’t hesitate to join the community on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Youtube, Instagram.

Whilst we’re working on these platforms, we’d like to involve you in the process of reflection. You’ll no doubt want to follow the adventure. What kind of information would you like to have on the round-the-world trip and about each flight-leg? What activities, discussions and perhaps concrete impact would you like to have? Please feel free to leave your comments below. They’ll be very helpful for us.

Since the solar airplane’s first flight in June, all the test flights have been successful, even if there are still a few improvements to be made on this experimental aircraft.

You may have noticed the vertical stabilizer shaking on the videos, a problem that our team is currently fixing.

Each test flight enables exploration of a different part of the flight envelope, with the ultimate objective of obtaining aircraft certification, thus opening the way for Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg’s first flights!

In order to fix this problem, the engineering team has decided to develop a teeter control mechanism for each propeller, which should reduce the vibrations by allowing the propellers to adjust to the airflow.

Each of these modifications made to Solar Impulse 2 demonstrates how difficult a project like this is, its innovative nature, and the pioneering spirit shown every day by the entire team.

A large crowd is expected at the airfield, so we have set up a "Speedy Boarding" system for our Supporters to enable you to avoid any wait to enter our hangar (Download it here). You just have to register and print out the entry permit, and then present that at the entrance to the hangar so as to avoid having to queue!

Please note that this entry permit does not exempt you from paying the entry fee for the airshow.

Every weekend, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg will give a talk from 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. under the wings of the aircraft. Come along and share their passion!
