United States: a mirage no more!

It’s official; Solar Impulse and its HB-SIA prototype are planning to join the United States this spring in an attempt to accomplish the legendary coast to coast flight: from San Francisco to Washington D.C. and New York City!

Our engineers are already busy preparing for the aircraft’s disassembly, starting next week and over a duration of 3 weeks followed by a reassembly in San Francisco of the same length. Although many might have thought we would be crossing the Atlantic, it’s important to understand that the HB-SIA prototype was not designed for such an adventure; that will be the role of HB-SIB, the second airplane currently under construction.

To gain the coast of California, HB-SIA will in fact be taken apart and transported in a Jumbo Jet: the only viable option to transport such a light and fragile aircraft. Naval transport was immediately omitted due to the high probability of potentially devastating storms and turbulent waters. The additional fuel consumption of a cargo airplane is a worthy and necessary investment to ensure the safety of the aircraft.

The USA adventure is a great opportunity for Switzerland to demonstrate its technological innovation and showcase this unique aircraft in the land of aviation pioneers.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to be part of the preparations: short videos of the disassembly as well as a weekly challenge will be posted on our Facebook page weekly starting next week!
